Tuesday Trio on Wednesday

New sketch is up on Tuesday Trio blog and this week's challenge is butterflies. I adapted the sketch for my one picture layout. I didn't feel like I need to add journaling, I already scrapped the rest of the pictures from the same day. This layout will go into Lila's album and the first layout is in our family album. Now, as I write this, I think I will go back and add few notes on the back of the layout about where the picture was taken and how much I loved the dress she is wearing. Just for Lila to know.

New card and more about Sketches2Scrapbook

I love playing with new scrapbooking goodies! Few days ago I received my order from My Favorite Things (I won their facebook prize drawing!). I ordered 2 stamp sets and this awesome Dainty Doily die! (I can't give you a link because it is sold out right now). I already made 3 cards using it. I made this sweet card for one little girl that is turning 1 this month. I cut 2 sizes of felt circles and sewed them together adding few beads in the center. All papers came from my scrap drawers.

I loaded the app on Lila's iPod and spent some time playing with it. It didn't disappoint! It has so many search options! It would be perfect to have at the crops. Think about having more than 100 terrific sketches with examples in your hand. It is getting even better - new release is already in progress ;-) For those of you with other smart phones - stay tuned! There will be a version for you also.

Leaves garland

A year ago I saw this beautiful felt garland. I loved it and was waiting for the opportunity to make one. The fall that arrived here quickly and already colored almost all trees with bright colors reminded me again about that leaves garland. I used Fiskars USX leaves template to trace the leaves on few sheets of felt and cut them out. After that I just stitched them together one after another. Super easy. Definitely one of the projects that can involve kids. They can help trace the leaves, cut them out and even sew. You can also use paper for the leaves. I think it will look great.

Tuesday Trio #29

Another Tuesday and another Tuesday Trio sketch! This time the challenge is to use a "window". I used my Fiskars USX with oval templates to make an oval opening in my card. Three hearts are picking out from the window. All papers and die-cuts are by Kaiser Crafts.

Two more layouts from the last week

Really old pictures here that I reprinted from an old film. I remembered about those pictures but was amazed to see all the details in the background - the gooseberry bushes and that old building that was used for storage I think. I really didn't remember that it was in such terrible shape.

I printed those pictures few months ago and finally scrapped them. Hadas and Raviv all dressed up for Purim. I painted the middle of the flowers with yellow glaze pen to make them look like daisies. I stitched around the journaling tag and added a little zig-zag stitch in the corners of the picture to balance the layout. When I was done, I felt like something is missing, so I decided to punch the corners and to add a frame with the colored pencils. Now I like it!

Scrap That Baby - Prompt 3: What's in a name?

Today the new Scrap That Baby challenge is up! Today's prompt is What's in a name. I decided to make a layout about my oldest daughter Lila. Since she has a Hebrew name it just felt more appropriate to write the journaling in Hebrew. Her name means lilac in Hebrew and that's what defined the color scheme. After I submitted my DT layout, Ofir looked at the layout and said - your Hebrew sucks. I couldn't argue since Hebrew (or English) is not my native language. With Ofir's help here is an improved version of the journaling.

For my blog readers that don't read Hebrew the journaling says: "Lilach, before you were born we thought about how should we name you. We made a list of the names we loved and waited to see who are you. It took us a week with you to find out that you are Lilach, a gentle and fragrant flower. When we moved to United Stated we found out that nobody here can pronounce your name, so we changed it to Lila (at least your are not Phil like daddy), but only in English. For us you will always be our Lilachi."

The mention of Phil is our internal family joke. My husbands name is Ofir, but for some reason people here think his name is Phil, that sounds like elephant in Hebrew.

I made the flowers using this tutorial. I had some purple paper scraps that I used for the flowers. The paper was one sided, so I sprayed the back side with Deep Plum glimmer mist for one flower, the second flower was misted after it was already done. The English title letters are misted as well. The little tag was cut using Fiskars USX.

I used white and purple acrylic paint to create a frame around my pictures. After all embellishments were in place I felt that something is missing. I covered the pictures with paper and sprayed the top of the layout with Deep Plum glimmer mist.

I am going to check the rest of the DT layouts - they look amazing. I have two more kiddos, so I need more inspiration for their name layouts. And don't forget to submit your layout for the challenge! It doesn't have to be new.

Flight

It is Wednesday again and that means the new Twisted Sketch is up

This time the twist was Flight. 2 year ago we visited Wright Brothers National Memorial and I took those pictures of Ella running along the first flight line. I thought it will be appropriate to use them.

Lots of snow and sleeping baby

I already decided that I will not use this sketch from Scrapbook Challenges and put the printout in my scrap drawer. But when I looked at these pictures from the last winter I thought it might work after all. I pull out the sketch again and made this layout. And I am glad I did! I love how it turned out. The base for the layout is K&Co Silhouette glitter paper. The rest of the patterned paper is Basic Grey. I used my Quickutz Washington font for the title.

The red glittered birdies are Martha Stewart stickers. They come attached to the golden branches that I cut off.

This layout is also based on Scrapbook Challenges sketch. It came together quickly. I think I used the last bits of Heidi Grace "Only Time" collection. It was one of my favorites!

Layouts from the kitchen

I like to have my camera handy when I am in the kitchen - there is always something interesting happening. Sometimes I need to think - should I take the baby down from the table or should I take the picture first :)

I took the picture first but for the record the baby is safe.
Here are 2 layouts from not so dramatic events. Eli is enjoying his pickle. Who would think that 13 months old will like pickles?? I used Week 1 sketch from Six Weeks of Sketches on Ella Publishing blog.

To create the scallops I put this Fiskars template under the cardstock and went over the edges with a piece of sandpaper. I used whitewash core'dinations cardstock with green core. I found it at my local Jo-Ann. Love core'dinations! So pretty!
Here Ella and Eli are sharing fruit snacks. That's when we found out that he really likes them. This little baby has a sweet tooth :)

The little windows are cut with Fiskars USX using freehand cutting. The cupcake is also cut with USX using the cupcake template.

2 layouts from last night

Remember this Blog Hop? Guess what? I actually won a prize :) The full collection of Basic Grey Origins. The full collection is a lot of patterned paper. You will be seeing lots of layouts in green/yellow/brown color scheme from me :)

Here is the first one. Based on Sketch 181 from Scrapbook Challenges. All products are Basic Grey except the gray cardstock. I used Fiskars USX to cut the journaling tag and Fiskars squeeze corner punch.

The whole central part of the layout is raised with pop dots.

Adventures in Scrapbooking: Using kits - week 1

Last Thursday I started a new Big Picture Scrapbooking class that is called Adventures in Scrapbooking: Using Kits. It is taught by super creative May Flaum. I know May from her years as one of the Lead Fiskateers and she is always up to something fun. During the first week May used the August kit by Jenni Bowlin that of course I have. So far I made only one layout from the kit so I was glad to dig it out and create few layouts.

Summerfest 2009. The letter stickers are also by Jenni Bowlin but they came in a different kit.

Those little flower sequins are so cute!

In this layout I was inspired by May to stitch a photo mat from the journaling cards.

I had those cute pictures that I took during one of my stroller walks few weeks ago. I used 2 pieces of deep burgundy cardstock that was not part of the kit but fit nicely with the colors. The leave and the squirrel are cut with USX using this and this templates.

The punched border is sprayed with some gold glimmer mist. The layout is based on a sketch by May.
I have another layout in works and probably enough papers for 2 more layouts.

Ad Inspired

This week the challenge at Write.Click.Scrapbook was to create an ad inspired layout. Emily Pitts posted an ad and the layout she did few years back.
Here is what I made (yep, more Halloween pictures)

Super simple. I punched two scallop borders and layered them. I than added the cat embellishment (Target dollar spot!) and Making Memories sparkling stickers.

But that's not all. As I always tell to my daughter - first you need to read the instructions! This time I didn't read the instructions and thought that the challenge was to create a layout inspired by any ad. I found this ad in our local magazine:

And created this layout:

I used my new Brackets and Journal USX template to cut the journaling tag and few strips of Basic Grey paper that came in the Jenni Bowlin kit for the frame. The story behind this layout is that after Eli learned how to crawl he didn't want to sit still during our monthly photo shots with the bunny. He always tried to crawl towards the camera or just outside my little photo scene.

One challenge + one misunderstanding = 2 layouts

Simplified Iris Folding Black Cat tutorial

I love iris folding! It is one of the first techniques I learned to do and I still like it. It is simple and creates a stunning results. Thinking about the Kids Crafts Halloween crop that Amy E and myself are planning for this Saturday at Fiskateers I had an idea for a simple iris folding Halloween project that will be suitable for kids.

There are plenty great iris folding tutorials on the web, I am not going to write another one, I will just show step-by-step how I did my project. I like to use the generic iris folding templates that I found few years ago on the web. Thy are created by Judy Headrick. Each pdf file contains the same template in different sizes. The number of edges will determine the number of the different types of paper that will be needed for the project. For the cat project I used the triangle template.

1. Download the template and print it.
2. Cut a 5"x7" piece of cardstock for the background. I used orange.
3. Cut a 2.5" circle opening using aUSX and a circle shape template in the lower part of the cardstock piece.

3. Attach the cardstock with the opening to the template page face down using temporary adhesive. Triangle template page gives 4 sizes of triangles. When you select a template make sure that the template is larger than the opening. I used the largest triangle. Center the iris as you wish. I put the iris slightly off center. Transfer the numbers on the template that are not visible to the visible part. See the next picture.

4. Choose 3 patterned papers or cardstock to use. I used different types of black - some printed paper from an old paper pack, some Bazill bling and some shiny paper that was a CD envelope in it's former life. Cut few strips of each paper 1/2" width.

5. Create a key. You can skip this if you know what are you doing, but if you work with kids it is nice to have a key. Mark 3 sides of iris with different signs. I put circle, asterisk and star. Glue 3 square samples of the chosen papers and mark them with a selected sign. See next picture.

6. Apply adhesive around the opening and start covering the stripes in the pattern with corresponding stripes of paper. Start with the lowest visible number. Remember that that the paper goes face down. If the iris is not in the center like in my example, some of the numbers will be missing. It is ok. Continue from the lowest to the highest number applying adhesive where needed to secure the strips. That's where the simplified part comes in. In traditional iris folding you use pattered paper or origami paper and you fold each strip. To make it easier for the kids we are not folding the paper. As a bonus we can use cardstock and thicker patterned paper.
7. Continue till you are done and only one triangle is left uncovered.
8. Remove the temporary adhesive, flip the cardstock and decide what paper to use for the last triangle (the iris). Cut a piece of paper large enough to cover the iris and adhere it from the back
8. Cut a piece of cardstock large enough to cover the mess and adhere it to the back of the project.
9. Flip it over and admire.
10. Cut out a cat head from a piece of cardstock (I made a template for my daughter to use) and attach a pipe cleaner tail. You are done!
Notes: I made this project with my 8 years old daughter. I cut the opening and attached the cardstock to the template. She chose the paper, cut the paper stripes, built the key (with my help) and completed the project. She decided to make a face for her cat and than she added the paws, the fish and the trash can :)

In a similar way I used an oval shape and a square iris folding template to make a witch hat
